Busy summer for golf club

-

LOCHGILPHEAD Golf Club gents played for Nicky’s Cup, a two-round competition in memory of Nicky Ciarella, during the last weekend in July.

Ryan McGlynn was delighted to win the event, with David Sinclair finishing close behind.

Last weekend saw the gents play another two-round competition in wet conditions, this time playing for the Centenary Cup. Winning on this occasion was Ross Sinclair, with Jim Hunter a close second with only three strokes of a difference. Some brave souls played in this competition, as well as in the James Mundell Memorial Open in Tarbert, where Alex MacAulay from Lochgilphead took second place with a net 66.

The ladies played for the Centenary stableford on Saturday July 29, and Ele Hunter was pleased to win this, seeing an improvement in her golf after her recent injury. And last weekend saw them play a nine-hole stableford, which was won by Kathleen Young with 16 points, beating Dorothy Clark by one point. Donna McKellar and Ele also travelled to Arran for an away competition on Thursday July 27. Playing in the ladies greensomes at Shiskine, they were delighted to be the winners with a net 41 – a huge improvement on last year’s effort. They are looking forward to welcoming the contingent of Shiskine ladies to their open on Sunday August 27. Places are still available by contacting Donna McKellar on 07919 242053.

The juniors have been just as busy, playing for the JMK Quaich which was won by Kern McKellar with Murry McDonald taking second place.

Next on their fixture list was the MacAulay Quaich, and not to be outdone by his brother, Ruan McKellar was the winner this time, with Kern taking second place.

The weather has made the course damp underfoot but that has not affected the standard of play and the greens are coming on a treat thanks to all the hard work by Jim Hunter and the team of helpers who attend the working party days.

This weekend sees the gents and ladies play for the MacAulay Cup and the MacAulay Rosebowl respectively, while the juniors have their two-round championship on Monday August 14 and Tuesday August 15.
