INSIDE THIS WEEK: Stalwart wins James Mundell Memorial Open
DESPITE heavy rain in the lead up to the James Mundell Memorial Open, Tarbert golf course stood up to the test with the greenkeeping staff and members doing a great job in preparing the course.
The poor overhead conditions and slick greens made scoring difficult for golfers on Sunday August 6, with the players in the middle ballot getting the worst of the conditions.
Lochgilphead father and son Alex and Kenneth McAulay set the early pace with net 66 and 67 respectively, with Alex’s score remaining in the lead until the final group finished. Iain Johnstone Senior finished a shot back with net 68 for fourth place.
The trophy winner was the recently retired John MacNab who played steady golf, helped by a birdie at the sixth when he almost holed his second shot. He was in complete control in the testing conditions with his 71-7 for a winning score of 64, taking home the coveted trophy and a special bottle of Jura whisky kindly donated by host Catherine Mundell.
In the gross section, Bruce MacNab took first place with 72, followed by visitor Robert Logan on 74, Keith Blair on 75 BIH and Steven Gilmour, also on 75.
Closest to the pin at the sixth was John MacNab. Closest to the pin at the eighth was Robert Logan and longest drive at the second was Steven Gilmour. Club captain Keith MacTaggart paid tribute to James Mundell in his closing remarks and to Catherine for her continued sponsorship and help to the club.
This weekend sees the Archie MacNab Memorial Cup first round take place. This popular stableford format takes place over 36 holes, with the second round the following weekend.
