Six-a-side success at shinty club open day
A BUSY day at Inveraray Shinty Club open day saw a fine display of healthy competition as teams competed in a six-a-side competition.
Held on Sunday August 13 at the Winterton pitch, this was the second year the club has run this event. The funds raised from the day will be used towards the running of the club, with a sum of the proceeds being donated to the community council as they try to raise enough funds for a community minibus.
Although raising funds was an important part of the day, more importantly was engaging with the community in the hope of increasing volunteer numbers and appointing a new treasurer.
The day started at 10am with youth coaches Ross Griffin, Andrew Stewart, Gordon Pirie and Scott Roberston putting the primary-aged players through some fun skill testing.
At the end of the session each young player was awarded a backpack with the club crest, water bottle and a certificate.
As with last year, the ‘older’ generation then got in on the act with six teams competing for the Peter MacCallum memorial quaich.
Local sponsors WD Semple, B&M Centre, the Inveraray Inn, Brambles, Ross Griffin Landscaping and CR Construction backed a team each throughout the group stage of the round robin tournament.
In the end, it was the Ross Griffin Landscaping and WD Semple teams which made it through to contest the final, with Ross Griffin Landscaping taking the win.
At the end of the tournament the trophies, kindly supplied by Midton Actrylics, were given to the winners and runners-up, with the winning captain proudly receiving the Peter MacCallum Quaich.
Inveraray chairman Euan McMurdo said he was delighted with how the day had turned out and that it was great to have so many of the club, young and old, there throughout the day.
He also expressed his optimism at engaging with new members to fill roles to help Inveraray Shinty Club become a stronger, more organised community club.
