Time to get your MOJO working
ATTENTION all musicians and lovers of music that is original, local and live.
Look out for the launch of MOJO – a live music event where original Argyll acts will perform in a local setting.
MOJO is a onenight-only showcase of some of the very most talented, fresh, stand-out musicians from all over Argyll.
Created in the afterglow of an amazingly successful MAMA Fest earlier this month, the event started out last year as O’MAMA by Dan Sloan-Griffiths and Jamie Salmon.
Now it’s back, re-invented and re-energised as MOJO, ready to spread its wings and go it alone in the pioneering world of new music.
Passion
Jamie and Dan each have a particular passion for original sounds, and the purpose of MOJO will be to give originality an extra airing, to support the bands and to inspire others.
‘MOJO is a word that we think best encapsulates the musician when in their own element,’ said Dan.
‘It’s hard, especially in an area like Argyll, to get music of your own heard. MAMA Fest and other festivals have always been great for artists in general, but we hope to add to their great work by spotlighting the original contribution of sound.’
The lads’ plan is to select an area of Argyll, team up with people in that community and select a couple of bands they think would best connect with people. Added to that would then be a set of that community’s own musicians. The heart of these events would be the village hall or whatever local venue is chosen.
‘We hope to give the locals a great night of music and a boost to their part of the world. Local musicians will get the chance to show their talent and connect with other musicians from outwith their area.’
The first MOJO will be held in Craignish Village Hall, Ardfern, on Saturday October 21.
As well as an Ardfern ‘talent spot’, the event will feature well known Ardrishaig singer/ songwriter Danny Carroll – known for his energetic acoustic rock – followed by MOJO headliners Citizen 9, an awesome rock band from Oban.
Dan continued: ‘This is a punt for us, but a worthwhile one. Even though we don’t have any financial support we hope that ticket sales will cover costs.
‘Any money we make will go directly to the running of the event, including a share to the bands. Any surplus will be kept for any future MOJO events.’
Dan then issued a rallying call for any musicians who would be keen to play at the first MOJO in Ardfern, or in any future events.
‘If successful, the plan is to target all areas of Argyll for an annual MOJO, so watch this space to find out more,’ he concluded.
Tickets are being printed and posters will soon be out there, so keep an eye open.
