Front green plans move forward as pool filled in

-

THE DIGGERS have moved into the children’s paddling pool on Lochgilphead front green.

The pool has lain unused for some time, barricaded off by industrial fencing, but plans are under way to reinstate the area to more productive use after filling in the pool.

The subject of the play park came up at Monday’s meeting of Lochgilphead Community Council.

Questions were asked over the need to employ contractors to carry out the work on the paddling pool.

Councillor Sandy Taylor told community council members: ‘The work is being covered by the council’s revenue budget, but the fact is the council doesn’t have any spare labour to carry out this type of work. The current workforce is struggling to keep up with grass cutting and filling potholes, so the only way is to contract it out.’

Community council convener Andy Buntin remarked: ‘The important thing, I suppose, is that it’s getting done.’

A meeting between interested parties, including Argyll and Bute Council, will be held later this month to discuss ideas for the play park and wider front green area.

‘We all know it’s going to take a bit of time to get agreement, but we are moving in the right direction,’ said Andy Buntin.

‘As a council we want to support local improvement programmes, which is why we created the £3 million Tarbert and Lochgilphead Regeneration Fund,’ explained a council spokesman.

He added: ‘It has been proposed the community project to regenerate and carry out improvements to the front green be taken forward with support from this fund.’

The council’s policy and resources committee was expected to consider the projects to be taken forward at its meeting yesterday (Thursday).
