-

TWELVE girls from Mid Argyll Athletic Club travelled to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Sunday to compete in the national under-12s super team competition.

The local club entered three girls’ teams in the competition which attracted 52 girls’ teams and 46 boys’ teams from all over Scotland, including teams from the Isle of Lewis and North and South Uist.

The girls’ A-team, consisting of Jemma MacDonald, Eleanor Dale, Beth Johnstone and Ruby-Jo Philips, finished 24th overall. With each team member winning valuable points for the team, it is clear to see how they secured such success.

Ruby-Jo Philips excelled in the shot putt by throwing 4.92 metres to finish an impressive 21st out of more than 240 competitors. Beth Johnstone also impressed in this event, finish- ing in 52nd place. Jemma MacDonald recorded 9.9 seconds in the 60 metres which was fastest out of all Mid Argyll girls and Eleanor Dale proved to be a valuable member as she was consistent over all three events.

The girls’ B team finished in 43rd place and pushed the A team close in the four x 200 metre relay as they finished less than half a second behind. The B team consisted of Jorja MacDonald, Ruby Dunlop, Maisie Gilmour and Sophie Balkeen.

Jorja MacDonald was the top scorer, encouraged by a 2.99 metre long jump, which was the longest jump amongst all of the Mid Argyll girls. Sophie Balkeen impressively finished in the top 50 girls overall for the shot putt, throwing 4.40 metres.

The girls’ C team was made up of Erin Naisby, Sara Bakali, Jodie Allan and Louise Pendreigh. Erin Naisby was top scorer after throwing four metres in the shot putt.

Overall, the girls’ competition was won by North Ayrshire and Giffnock North came out top in the boys’ competition. Another local team, Campbeltown Running Club, also impressed at the competition securing 27th place, just short of Mid Argyll’s A-team.

The national competition was a great experience for competitors and for the parents who got the chance to see their youngsters compete on the big stage.
