Tarbert – a whole world of festivals!
THE CHARMING fishing village of Tarbert, photographed above by the world reknowned, late, great Dennis Hardley, plays host to several festivals this season that celebrate its rich heritage in sea, food, music and literature.
The excitement begins May 25-28 with The Scottish Series, Scotland’s premier annual yachting regatta. The Clyde Cruising Club organises this long-running event, in which keen sailors enjoy passage racing and Olympic triangles in Loch Fyne.
This year’s programme includes the opening ‘Clyde Challenger Race’ from Largs for white sail, family class and cruisers.
The laid-back atmosphere and good craic of this event have sailors and non-sailors alike coming back year
after year. All visitors, whether into sailing or not, will love the spectacle and everyone is welcome. The Tarbert Harbour Authority, whose facilities are ever improving, provide a warm welcome for all competitors from the Harbour Master and staff.
The Seafood Festival, which is held in July 7-8, gives visitors the opportunity to sample Tarbert’s culinary delights. The harbour bustles with food stalls, cookery demonstrations and tastings.
A highlight of the weekend is the crowning of the Seafood Festival Queen and her princesses, who arrive in a flourish by sea and parade through the village led by the Mid Argyll Pipe Band.

The Tarbert Traditional Boat Festival, 20-22 July draws beautiful vessels of all kinds from across Scotland and Ireland over the weekend, providing a spectacle in the harbour for on-lookers. Visitors enjoy boat tours, stalls, live music, demonstrations and family activities.
Tarbert Fair has been held since 1705 and is one of the oldest fairs in the Highlands. It starts every year on the last Thursday of July (26th-29th) and continues
the festivities over the weekend. Originally a cattle fair, it's now about live music, amusements and fairground rides.
One of the longest- running music festivals in Argyll, the Tarbert Music Festival has been celebrating song and food for 28 years.
Held the weekend of September 14-16, it features a full programme including the popular Fèis for children in the morning and adults in the afternoon plus concerts by local talent, turning out everything from rock to reggae to traditional music. Impromptu sessions are encouraged and attract musicians from far and wide. Visitors will enjoy the relaxed vibe and fantastic local seafood in the hotels and restaurants.
This lovely book festival in the pretty fishing village of Tarbert is a cracker. Hear book readings by a selection of authors and meet the people behind the characters. There's lots to enjoy for adults and children across various venues from the 26th-28th October
