Lochgilphead Soccer Centre set to expand

-

LOCHGILPHEAD Soccer Centre is to welcome girls and pre school children after a record number of primary one pupils from across Mid Argyll signed up for mini football sessions.

The soccer centre decided to pilot a girls only training session on Friday nights, with numbers quickly growing from six girls to 14.

Open to any girls from primary four to S2, the pilot has been so successful in attracting a record number of girls to the sport that it will continue. Mixed teams

In addition to continuing to having mixed teams, the girls now have their own teams and are entering tournaments across Argyll and Bute.

The demand has also been high for the centre to include pre- school children, with sessions now available for all children in their final pre-school term.

The half hour mini kickers sessions will start tonight, Friday April 20, at 6.15pm and will run every Friday on the outdoor artificial pitches until June 15. Busy

Bruce West, chairman of Lochgilphead Soccer Centre, said: ‘I have been involved with the soccer centre for a number of years and I have never seen it so busy.

‘It is great seeing all the children, but especially the girls, having so much fun playing sport and their hunger to travel to play in festivals has been terrific.

‘We now have a number of Red Star squads from primary two to secondary two playing all over the west of Scotland and their technical standard of play as well as their fitness is fantastic.

‘We are actively pursuing funding and growing the number of volunteers getting involved with our social committee as well as coaching and anyone interested in being involved with a long-established and growing organisation should not hesitate to get in touch.

‘Young people seeking volunteer opportunities are particularly welcome. No experience of football or sport is required, just bags of enthusiasm.’

Any children in their final year of pre-school up to S2 interested in sport and having fun in a safe environment are welcome to come along to the artifical pitches on a Friday night.
