Inveraray beat battling Glen to reach Celtic Cup semis
THE SCORELINE might suggest this was a cup tie formality for the higher league shinty side, but ‘the Glen’ are rarely a pushover at home.
National Division side Inveraray were faced with determined resistance from the South Division One outfit and some fine displays from younger members of the Col Glen team.
In the Glendaruel sunshine, Allan MacDonald gave Inveraray the lead after 28 minutes before Lewis MacNicol added a second.
But that was the end of the scoring until well into the second half.
Inveraray had to battle on a pitch that was sticky in places before Fraser Watt and Allan MacDonald again made it 4-0.
Three quick late goals put gloss on the win. Fraser Watt got his second before Craig Taylor made it 6-0.
Fraser Watt completed his hat-trick, adding Inveraray’s seventh – a final tally that was slightly harsh on this battling Col Glen side.
Inveraray now travel to Mossfield to play Oban Camanachd in the semi-finals on Saturday May 19. In the other semi-final, Kyles Athletic will travel to face Glasgow Mid Argyll. KYLES Athletic went a couple of points clear at the top of the league after beating a depleted Kilmory side in a match reversed to MacRae Park, Lochgilphead.
Kilmory duo Bruce Johnstone and Andy Cunningham both served one-match bans.
Kyles Athletic’s Sandy MacKenzie on 16 minutes and Luke Thornton four minutes later gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Sandy MacKenzie got his second on 85 minutes.
Steven Gilmour pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later but the Tighnabruaich men took the points.
Kilmory’s younger players, however, can be pleased with a good performance against physically bigger opponents.
On Saturday April 28, Kilmory have a home tie against Lochside Rovers.
