SAFL Premier 2 Lochgilphead Red Star 6 Duncanrig 1

SHARE Argyll-sponsored Red Star welcomed Duncanrig to Lochgilphead Joint Campus on Saturday April 28, knowing that a win would secure the club promotion to SAFL Premier 1 for the new season.

With that incentive in mind, Star came flying out of the traps and could have been ahead inside two minutes, when Aaron Moore burst through the midfield. He managed to run straight through the Duncanrig defence though the Star captain’s effort went just past the post.

The scoreline didn’t stay blank for long as Star continued to put their visitors under pressure, as Kyle Selfridge opened the scoring with a surging run from his defensive position, latching onto a through ball and slotting past the Duncanrig keeper to put Star ahead after eight minutes.

Lee MacLean was on hand to double Star’s lead soon after when he finished with his usual composure after an excellent team passing move.

Red Star were three up inside half an hour when Kieran Moore beat the Duncanrig defence for pace before finishing low into the bottom corner.

Star were in no mood to be complacent and added to their tally with Kieran Moore doubling his account for the day with another excellent finish to put the home side 4-0 up at half-time.

Into the second half and Gregor Peacock scored with an excellent shot from outside the box when curled past the despairing goalkeeper as he picked up a goal which he thoroughly deserved for another energetic performance on the wing.

Star were able to give all their substitutes a good run out for the rest of the game as they looked to keep the intensity going for the full 90 minutes. Star added their sixth of the game with 20 minutes to go when Kyle Selfridge played in Colin Weir, whose square ball was met by Kieran Moore, and he was happy to convert for yet another hat-trick as Star went 6-0 up.

To their credit, Duncanrig never stopped trying to play and they capitalised on a rare defensive slip from Star and their striker’s effort beat Ben Pollock, who was disappointed not to keep the effort out to make it 6-1.

The home side were happy to maintain possession for the majority of the second half, gaining promotion to Premier 1 with a stylish victory. With the season’s main objective secured, Star will now be looking to securing the league title knowing that two wins from their remaining four matches will be enough.
