When ocean giants were landed in Ardrishaig

-

THE photographs published here were kindly handed to the Argyllshire Advertiser by sisters Mary MacDonald and Alma McGuinness, who were born and bred in Ardrishaig.

Taken from a family photograph album that once belonged to their grandmother, Catherine MacKinnon, the photographs appear to depict basking sharks landed at Ardrishaig.

Mary and Alma believe their father might be in the larger group beside the two sharks, which appears to have been taken at the slip.

Looking at the other photograph, the ladies also told us they believe that the bigger boy pictured beside the shark is well-known local man Peter Ciarella, who recently retired from Burgh Electrics in Lochgilphead.

They think it was taken in Ardrishaig, but where?

Does anyone out there have more information on these photographs and the people in them?

We suspect they may have been taken in the 1930s, and the building in the group shot looks like the Egg Shed which is currently part of a renovation project being undertaken by Scottish Canals.

Information

And can anyone tell us whether these sharks were deliberately hunted or caught accidentally by fishermen? If you have any information, send us the details by emailing editor@argyllshireadvertiser.co.uk, calling 01546 602345 or by messaging the Argyllshire Advertiser Facebook page.
