Balliemore agony as Inveraray exit on penalties

(aet – Fort William won 4-2 on penalties) THE PICK of the Liberty British Aluminium-sponsored Balliemore Cup first round ties was between Fort William and Inveraray at An Aird.
The sides couldn’t be separated after two hours of shinty and Fort William eventually ran out 4-2 winners following a penalty shoot-out.
Fort William took the lead on 17 minutes. Referee Martin MacLean awarded the hosts a penalty and Victor Smith stepped up to score from the spot.
Inveraray levelled on 58 minutes with Allan MacDonald scoring and they took the lead on 72 minutes with Craig Taylor netting.
However, they only stayed in front for a couple of minutes. Jack Fraser got on the end of a ball from midfield and touched the ball over the fullback and past the keeper before scoring. It remained 2-2 until the end of the 90 minutes and, with no goals during the extra-time period, the contest was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Sean Cruickshank, Victor Smith, Jack Fraser and Lachie Shaw all converted from the spot to put Fort William through to the next round.

THE DERBY between the Inveraray and Kyles Athletic juniors was moved from the Winterton to Glendaruel.
A devastating first-half performance saw Kyles run out 7-0 winners.
Ross MacRae opened the scoring on nine minutes and Scott MacDonald added a second just four minutes later.
Luke Thornton scored on 18 and 26 minutes, either side of a 22nd-minute Brandon Wilson strike to make it 5-0.
Brandon Wilson got his second on the half-hour mark and, if that wasn’t enough, Innes MacDonald added a seventh on 35 minutes.
Kenny Wotherspoon named south under-21 boss
OBAN Celtic first team manager Kenny Wotherspoon will manage the South U21 squad in this year’s Caol Cup match against the North U21.
The match is always of interest to the Scotland U21 coaching staff ahead of the international matches.
Wotherspoon will be assisted in his South U21 role by Les Kinvig.

First played in 1879, the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup is one of shinty’s oldest trophies and this year’s final will be hosted by Taynuilt on Saturday 30 June and will be broadcast live on BBC Alba.
