Safety worries at Ardrishaig

-

AN ARDRISHAIG man has highlighted the dangers of fishing in Ardrishaig – while Scottish Canals complete work at the village pier.

John Muir from the village said that the main fishing spot for youngsters was now closed off as the building work was completed.

He continued: ‘There is a massive health and safety issue for Scottish Canals, especially as children are now fishing near the lighthouse rather than the pier.

‘I request that Scottish Canals acknowledge this issue and put a railing up, as I do think it is an accident waiting to happen.’

Scottish Canals said they were working closely with the community while the work continues to highlight the hazards surrounding the area.

A spokesperson said: ‘While there are currently no plans to install a railing on the breakwater, we do work closely with community organisations and user groups throughout the year to promote our ‘Canal Careful’ campaign and highlight the hazards associated with open bodies of water – including falls from height.

‘We will continue to encourage all users to be mindful when travelling on or along our waterways and would urge parents to relay the same messaging to their children.

‘It should also be noted that, while we are aware of incidents of fishing from the structure in the past, Ardrishaig pier is an operational area and in the interests of public safety, no unauthorised access is permitted.

‘While this is outlined in the signage on the fencing leading to the structure, a new automated gate is being installed as part of the pier project to further discourage unauthorised access.’
