First Inveraray beach clean is huge success

-

SHORE Clean Inveraray had a huge response to its inaugural clean-up on Sunday May 6.

More than 20 participants took part to scour stretches of the town's shoreline. The number exceeded expectations thanks to warm weather and bank holiday festivities.

Shore Clean Inveraray was set up in February 2018 in response to the local and global concerns of the effects discarded waste and plastic is having on local communities, coastlines and marine life.

On initial inspection, the group believed Inveraray remained largely unaffected by waste on the shoreline, thanks to great refuse teams.

Despite this, it was discovered many large items, including traffic signs, bicycles, vacuum cleaners and tyres, had been discarded on the shore.

A live eel was also safely returned to Loch Fyne.

Shore Clean organiser Brian Spalding said: ‘Thanks go to our fantastic volunteers, local retailers and community groups for supporting the initiative and members of Inveraray Coastguard Rescue Team for their advice on the day and getting the gloves on. Thanks also to Argyll and Bute Council for loaning equipment and collecting the waste and Keep Scotland Beautiful for its fantastic resource online.’
