Lochgilphead coach wins sport award

-

JOHN Gillies, who has coached Lochgilphead Boccia players to success at four Special Olympics GB, has had his work recognised.

At the annual general meeting of Special Olympics Scotland West, he was presented with the Service to Sport Award for his outstanding dedication to the sport over a substantial period of time.

Gordon McCormack, head of Scotland West, praised John’s exceptional involvement over many years, travelling hundreds of miles in support of his players.

He described him as an old hand and a perfectionist who strives to get the best from his players as well as for his players. John has been known to argue the point with any official who does not understand and apply the proper rules.

His players are very proud of this award and they are all now looking forward to their next big event, the 40th anniversary games, celebrating this amazing organisation in Great Britain.

Scotland West has the honour of organising this major event at Stirling University between August 9 to 13.

As well as coaching the Lochgilphead members, John is the head coach for the SW team involving visits to the other members of the team in Glasgow and Paisley and responsibility for their coaching at the 40th anniversary games.

The team is now in full training for this much-anticipated event. As always there is much fundraising to be done to fund travel and accommodation so all offers, donations and sponsorship would be welcome.
