Youths seal DFDL league cup final spot with narrow win

-

FOLLOWING last year’s triumph over Renton Craigandro, Lochgilphead Red Star 2004s were delighted to make it to the DFDL League Cup final again this season.

In a tight match on Sunday May 13 in Dumbarton, the Lochgilphead youngsters eventually saw off Dumbarton Riverside 3-2.

Red Star started well, taking the lead with a stunning strike from 20 yards by Zak Barclay. A further two goals saw a return to goal scoring form for Conner McMurchy. Riverside battled hard, twice pulling goals back, but the Lochgilphead boys held on in a very competitive game.

Last Sunday, May 20, saw the 2004s head back to Dumbarton for a league match against Dumbarton United. Although the boys took an early lead through Woody Hoad, United defended stoutly for 20 minutes and it was only later in the first half that Red Star’s pressure began to tell with a terrific strike from Keiran Caskie and three goals from Conner McMurchy giving Star a 5-0 lead at half time.

A slack start to the second half allowed United to pull a goal back, but further goals from Caskie, McMurchy and then a goal directly from a free kick by Colin Cameron completed the scoring and a fine 8-1 win for the Lochgilphead team.

Although the boys have no game this weekend, they have a busy few weeks after that with their cup final scheduled for 3pm on Sunday June 3 at Millburn Park, Alexandria, then a visit to Lochgilphead of second-placed Glentyan Thistle on Sunday June 10 for a potential league decider.
