Glorious golf on display at the T&W Open

-

Saturday September 15 saw more than 50 golfers take part in the T&W Open at Lochgilphead Golf Club.

The popular team event teed off at 8.40am with the final putt of the day being holed at just after 5pm.

Many of the big names of Lochgilphead golf took to the course and the morning pace was set by Adrian Angus, who played some sparkling golf alongside his teammates Ross Sinclair and Roddy MacDonald.

Stuart MacKenzie made his long-awaited return to competitive golf and chipped in for an eagle two at the fourth as the field battled to stay in contention. Mackenzie’s early inspiration wasn’t enough to seal a top three finish but teammate Sandy Crawford won nearest the pin at the 18th. The tension was building as the afternoon starters headed out onto the course. The pre-tournament favourites Alasdair Provan, Jamie O’May and Stephen Colligan mounted a charge with a series of birdies. They fell short by one shot but claimed a creditable third place.

Next to challenge were Maggies Caddies, a team comprising Margaret MacKinnon, David MacKinnon and Ian Phillips. They matched the early pace setters but had to settle for second place as Angus, Sinclair and MacDonald held on to win the prestigious T&W trophy.

Robbie Wilson won the nearest the pin at the ninth which was a deserved reward for the club’s hard working greens convenor. Hal Jones from Tarbert captured the longest drive at the second after this accolade had been held by Alastair MacVicar for most of the day.

Simon Taylor’s sponsors’ speech was drowned out by a boisterous crowd who had gathered in the clubhouse for the prize giving but club captain David Sinclair was able to restore order and present the prizes.

Adrian Angus capped off a fine day by winning the raffle prize of a four-ball and overnight stay at the Machrie Hotel, kindly donated by the Machrie Hotel and Links, Islay.

As the team of volunteers, who had been at the club since 6.45am, continued to provide top class hospitality to the competitors and their families the evening entertainment started, which was provided by local band None The Wiser.
