Co-op customers’ cash boosts charity funds
Every year the Co-op nominates local charities to raise money for throughout the year. As can be seen by the monumental cheques, this can add up quickly and go a long way to aiding various non-profit organisations.
The various charities stopped by their local Co-op to thank everyone who donated and to of course pick up their cheques.
In Lochgilphead, Oly Hemmings and Pete Creech gained £11,464.45 for the Heart of Argyll Wildlife Organisation, and are planning to use the money to refurbish their barn which is an outdoor educational space. Hannah and Sarah Nicolson accepted £11,177.61 towards a summer full of youth activities, possibly also in October. Malcolm Sinclair accepted the cheque for £11,120.54 for the Lochgilphead Phoenix Project which aims to improve The Front Green with a noticeboard and refurbish The Clock Lodge.
In Inveraray, SiMBA received £2,633.99, accepted by Susan Simpson and Tracey Vans. The money will go towards the Oban Tree of Tranquility: a full-sized sculpted copper tree, the leaves of which bear the names, dates and messages for babies who have passed away during pregnancy or soon after birth and will be displayed at Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds which has graciously gifted SiMBA a beautiful area of garden for the tree.
SiMBA Highland ambassador Susan Simpson said: ‘The tree will bring comfort and solace to countless families in Oban, Lorn and the isles. The trees often become a place of peace and tranquillity for bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings to visit, and for so many it is the only place that marks the existence of their much-loved, sorely missed child.’
Caroline Wood accepted a cheque for £2,890.92 which will go towards a dishwasher for Glenaray and Inveraray Church Hall.
Meanwhile in Tarbert, Feis an Tairbeirt accepted a cheque for £4,732.89 to go towards its musical activities next year.
As one shopper remarked: ‘The chump change really adds up.’
