Thought for the Week

- with Marilyn Shedden

My computer has decided to live a life independent of me and I don’t even recognise it any more. It is talking a different language which is quite incomprehensible.

Thankfully, there are some wonderful people who understand the vagaries of computers and can restore them to their former glory.

Of course as everything ‘crashes’, the inevitable question arises: ‘Have you backed everything up?’

‘Well, I really meant to but I haven’t done so in ages.’ A familiar story. So much can be lost and precious documents can be gone forever if the work is not backed up.

I wonder how we can back up our spiritual lives so that we can retrieve important resources when we need them.

I am interested in inner resources and the importance of things that sustain us in times of difficulty.

For Christians, there are scripture passages which are embedded in our psyche which help in times of trouble.

I often find myself singing a hymn to lift my spirits and find it nearly always does. For others, there are other ways. My father was not a believer but he loved poetry and he gained strength of soul and of character in many of his well-loved lines.

Music, too, can touch the soul and provide strength and comfort and inspiration. I wonder what your ‘back up’ is? What is your rock and your comfort in times of trouble? Thankfully, there is one who knows the vagaries of the human soul.

God, who is the maker and keeper of our days, is also the one who can restore us to our former glory, and all without a computer!
