Star fall to fellow league strugglers

FC Argyle 3 Lochgilphead Red Star 1 Premier One

Lochgilphead Red Star suffered defeat at fellow strugglers FC Argyle on Saturday after another shocking firsthalf performance saw them trail 3-0 at the interval.

Argyle could have taken the lead after five minutes when they broke clear after a long ball caught out the Star defence. Although Kalache was rooted to his line, he did well to block and hold the shot from the Argyle forward.

Star didn’t heed the warning and were caught out by a long ball again which an Argyle winger flicked on into the path of their striker who this time made no mistake and fired past Kalache into the bottom corner.

Star pressed for an equaliser but were struggling to get any fluency in their passing and it was the home side who added to their lead after half an hour. This time a free kick was floated to the back post and the Argyle number nine was more alert than the static Star defence and his header beat Kalache at the back post to double the home side's advantage.

At the other end, Star forced a succession of corners, going close when Aaron Moore met a Colin Weir delivery, however, his powerful header was blocked by the legs of the home goalkeeper.

The match was as good as over on the stroke of halftime when another through ball caught the Star rearguard out and once again the Argyle forwards were quickest to react and the forward slotted past Kalache to make the score 3-0 at the break.

Into the second half and Star tried to battle back into the game but once again were toothless in attack. Robert Docherty and Aaron Moore tried their luck with free kicks from outside the box but neither troubled the Argyle goalkeeper.

Ryan Caskie pulled a goal back with 12 minutes remaining after he was put through on goal by Aaron Moore and finished neatly into the bottom corner to at least get Star on the scoresheet at 3-1.

Player manager Luke Naisby was ordered off late on after picking up a second booking and in the process Argyle were awarded a penalty.

Fortunately for Star, the striker dragged his effort wide but the damage was already done.

Tomorrow Share Argyllsponsored Red Star play host to Argyll neighbours Campbeltown Pupils in the league with the game taking place at the Joint Campus 3G with a 2pm kick-off.
