Funding boost for women’s and girls’ health

Swimming lessons, healthy cooking classes and beauty therapy for women and girls on Islay and Jura are among 204 projects sharing £1.5 million National Lottery funding.

The cash from National Lottery Awards for All Scotland goes to 204 community, sports and arts projects across the country, many of which will break down barriers to physical activity for people of all ages and abilities.

Islay and Jura Community Enterprise is getting £5,919 to provide sport and leisure activities at the Mactaggart Leisure Centre, Bowmore.

Islay and Jura Community Enterprises chief executive Gary Scott said: ‘We are delighted to receive this National Lottery award which will help make sport and leisure more inclusive for women and girls living on Islay and Jura. We plan to provide swimming instruction classes, healthy cooking and eating workshops, gym advice and instruction, beauty therapy and nails and basic DIY in the home. There's something for everyone.'

A National Lottery Awards for All Scotland spokesperson said: ‘With spring just around the corner, it's a great time to be getting out and about to enjoy physical activities. Thanks to National Lottery players, this will now be possible for many people across Scotland who can take part in walking or cycling, dancing, taking up a new sport or enjoying outdoor nature pursuits.'
