Church window restoration group wowed by support
Over the past few months members and friends of Ardrishaig Parish Church have been working hard to raise the money needed to repair the church’s stainedglass windows.
The original art noveaustyle windows were installed when the church was renovated and extended in 1904 and the leadwork in particular is now in a poor condition and restoration by a specialist contractor is necessary.
Some of the windows are dangerous and steps have had to be taken to ensure the safety of the congregation, with pews in the centre of the church having to be blocked off.
The cost of restoration is in the region of £60,000 and a variety of fundraising has already been carried out, including occasional lunches after Sunday worship, a coffee morning, the filling of Smartie tubes with 20p pieces, and a rent-a-stall day.
A number of special items have also been produced for sale, including a hugely successful book of favourite recipes, contributed by church members. A shopping bag, tea towel and mugs, all with local views and fridge magnets illustrating the stained glass of the windows have also been designed.
The wider community has additionally boosted these efforts. The linked congregation of South Knapdale, in Achahoish, has offered match funding for the first £10,000 raised – an interim target already reached – and another bequest has been made for a special Fisherman’s Window.
With the support being given from the community, the Windows Restoration Appeal
Group hopes that grant applications currently being planned will further assist the congregation in reaching their final target.
In recognition of the tremendous support being given, the trustees restoration group and all members of Ardrishaig Parish Church offer their heartfelt thanks.
