Mackay and Co: Providing tailored services and solutions to suit all business needs

-

In 1979 Ian Mackay set up a chartered accountancy business in Golspie – a business which has an excellent reputation for assisting both businesses and individuals right across the Highlands of Scotland, and further afield.

In 2015, the business was taken over by Marcus MacIver. Marcus was brought up near Tain, and after graduating from Heriot Watt, he completed his training with Campbell Dallas LLP in Perth. Marcus moved over to the west and worked with R A Clement Associates, before the opportunity came up to take over Mackay and Co. David Ross joined the business in 2017, after having worked for R A Clement Associates in Oban for 14 years, and joined up again with his old colleague, Marcus. Initially, David headed up the Dingwall office of Mackay and Co but has now moved to the recently-opened Oban office.

'Oban is where I'm from originally and I've spent much of my working life here. So when Marcus and I talked about opening an office here, I was delighted by the idea. I was pleased to be back in the area, which I am very familiar with in terms of the kind of businesses you find here and the challenges they face.

'We offer a comprehensive range of services, and I have always believed that a Chartered Accountancy practice should be about more than just delivering a set of figures – more than just end-of-year results. Our role is to provide business advice and commercial nous, to be able to stand back and take an independent “holistic” view. It is the difference between working “in” and working “on” your business. When you, as a business owner or director, are busy delivering a service to your customers, and continually keeping track of paperwork and daily administration, it is useful to be able to stand back periodically and consider where the business is heading – what you want to achieve.'

David has experience in many sectors across industry and has particular expertise in the voluntary sector. 'I have been, and am currently, treasurer for several local charities, which helps immensely when talking to clients as you have seen what it's like from their point of view, which gives a much better understanding of the issues they face. The same issues are often transferable to other types of business.'

Mackay and Co offers a full range of services, from endof-year accounts for compliance purposes, to tax planning, book-keeping, payroll, business development and consultancy work, and more.

The Oban office is on Lochside Street in Oban,

above CGL – across from Tesco car park.
