A family affair as Lochgilphead’s newest shop opens

-

The business may have been in existence since 1995, but new modern premises just up the road from their old shop has given the MacGilp family business a new lease of life.

A Lochgilphead country pursuits business can stretch its legs after moving into new premises just up the road in Argyll Street.

Fyne Tackle is the new occupier of the former Stables shop, which had lain empty for a number of years. Recent refurbishment has brought it up to date and the bright, spacious shop is ideal for the family business, run by Archie MacGilp senior and junior. There is a wide range of products for sale in the new, impressive store, including upmarket Aigle wellington boots and country clothing including top brands Ridgeline, Deerhunter and Weirdfish.

As the new shop opened on Monday March 2, Archie junior said: ‘The new shop is great. It’s a bit bigger than where we were before and it’s new.

‘We have space for the gun room too and can display things a lot better.’

Fishing permits are available, as well as a wealth of knowledgeable advice on fishing and other country pursuits built up over many years.

Formerly proprietor at the Argyll Hotel in Ardrishaig, Archie senior noticed a demand for fishing advice from hotel customers. He set up Fyne Tackle almost 25 years ago, starting out selling fishing tackle before adding country clothing to the range.

Shooting products followed when son Archie joined the family firm. Now officially retired, Archie senior still lends a hand – jokingly describing himself as ‘a gopher’. He is probably selling himself a wee bit short given his years of experience.

The new shop, next door to the Mailbox post office and shop, is well worth a browse. It is open from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
