Mixed fortunes for young Lochgilphead Red Stars

-

In one of their best performances of the season, Red Star 2007s welcomed Glasgow Boys to Lochgilphead and secured all three points with an excellent 7-1 victory.

Pressing high, Red Star put pressure on Glasgow Boys forcing them to make mistakes in the game on Sunday March 1. This led to Star leading 4-0 at half-time with goals from Gibson, Semple and Cooper (2). Glasgow Boys started the second half well and were rewarded for their hard work with a goal. They created a few more chances but were thwarted by the safe hands of Urquhart. The Lochgilphead youngsters scored a further three goals through Todd, Semple and Gibson.

Also battling it out on Sunday March 1, Red Star 2004s faced last season’s league and cup double winners Drumchapel Amateurs at the astro pitch, Lochgiphead.

Red Star dominated the first half. Playing nice football, Star created a few chances and restricted their opponent’s opportunities. Unfortunately, just before half-time, Star were reduced to 10 players.

With a player short and the score 0-0, things looked tricky for Star but they made a terrific start to the second half with Aitken scoring twice. Drumchapel pulled one back, but a goal from Caskie and a great move finished off by McLean increased Star’s lead.

A 4-1 lead was the stuff of dreams but in the final 20 minutes it turned to a nightmare. Drumchapel turned the screw and Star’s effort began to tell as they tired.

Drumchapel pulled a goal back, then a second, then, in the final 10 minutes, scored three goals to win 6-4. An entertaining game and great performance from Red Star but not the result they were looking for.

On Sunday March 8,

Red Star 2007s travelled to Glasgow to face Park Villa. The Lochgilphead youngsters started brightly and took the lead through Gibson. It remained 1-0 at half-time, Star having had a claim for a penalty turned down.

The second half was end-toend football with some good play by Star, who created numerous chances, only to find the Park Villa keeper in excellent form.

Unfortunately for Star, the Park Villa forwards were also in excellent form converting their chances into goals to score four. Final score 4-1.

Last weekend, March 7, saw a Saturday game for Red Star 2004s as they played away to Paisley first division team Erskine in the quarter final of the West Region Cup. With only 11 boys travelling, it was always going to be a challenge for the Lochgilphead youngsters. Erskine dominated the early stages but Star began to get a foothold in the game. It was Erskine who were to take the lead but it wasn’t to last long as Aitken equalised for Star. A second goal for Erskine gave them a 2-1 lead at half-time. The second half saw Red Star equalise.

With time running out, Erskine scored a third from the penalty spot but Star didn’t let their heads drop.

A thrilling final five minutes would see Star pull a goal back and camp around the Erskine goal as they searched for an elusive equaliser. Final score 3-2.
