Duke of Edinburgh pupils supporting Tarbert

Tarbert Academy has been recognised by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) for the efforts of its pupils.

Helen Anderson, director for Scotland with DofE, thanked the Tarbert Open Award Centre (OAC) for achieving 275 hours of developing a skill; 275 hours of physical activity and 327 hours of volunteeri­ng in the community - with an estimated social value of £1,422.45.

Kylie Glen, Tarbert DofE co-ordinator, explained: ‘The Gold DofE group at Tarbert has been volunteeri­ng by helping out Feis participan­ts in Tarbert by teaching them how to play musical instrument­s, helping to set up sessions and tidy up equipment after sessions; coaching players at the after school football club in Tarbert; working in the local charity shop sorting out donations and undertakin­g general shop duties; helping out in the primary/early years department in Tarbert to gain experience of childhood developmen­t while supporting staff to deliver various activities and dog walking for members of the community who are unable to get out and about.

‘These pupils have still to complete their expedition as a result of the coronaviru­s pandemic but hope to travel to France for their final expedition to learn more about rural land uses in the country.’
