Thought for the Week

Jeanne Emrich wrote: ‘Dry seeds scatter from my hand into the wind. One clings as if to say: ‘There is in me, something yet to be’.’

We are like that seed, for within each of us is something that is yet to be.

There is always joy in new birth and how lovely it is to have two new baby boys in our community.

What is the something ‘that is yet to be’ in them?

Their world will be a very different place indeed.

What will our planet look like in 25 years or 50 years?

What animals and plants will have survived to enchant those who are babies now but will be young men and women in the future?

Gripped by a pandemic and the threat to our planet from global warming, we worry about the future of this new generation.

A generation that will be full of hope and promise and optimism, yet will have witnessed the demise of even more of creation in these next decades.

But maybe these babies will bring hope into the world. Maybe their generation will be the ones to save this beautiful planet from a head-on collision into destruction.

By 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish, more ice caps will have melted with an animal population decimated and more species teetering on the brink of extinction.

Can these babies do something about it? ‘There is in me, something yet to be.’ Our hope, the future’s hope, the planet’s hope is on these little shoulders.

But we need to tell them, to encourage them, to educate them as they grow up about this beautiful creation.

I pray that the God spark in them will change the world.
