Join us at SAMS and make a difference
It’s been the most amazing experience of my life, it’s changed everything about my life for the better. I’m now off to do amazing things and it’s all because of SAMS. Victoria Golding, SAMS graduate
Our blue planet is changing. Extreme weather events, record temperatures and flooding are an increasingly common occurrence. As the global community seeks to understand and prepare for these changes, we look to science to provide the answers – and you could help. The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), Scotland’s premier independent marine research institution based just outside of Oban, combines world-class teaching with one of the best student experiences in the UK to train the next generation of ocean scientists. As a partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands, we rank 1st in Scotland and 3rd in UK for earth and marine sciences (Guardian University Guide 2022) and our BSc (Hons) Marine Science course has scored a 100% satisfaction score in the National Student Survey for the past three consecutive years. With small class sizes and easy access to lecturers, there are unique opportunities for students to immerse themselves in marine science, from fieldwork and lab-based internships to contributing towards research projects and the chance to work on a research ship. As well as lectures delivered by world-renowned researchers, our degree course offers unrivalled fieldwork and practical skills, making best use of our location on Argyll’s beautiful west coast. Students on this four-year course in marine science develop a rounded understanding of the marine system. The programme integrates the biology, chemistry, physics and geology of the marine environment from Scottish lochs to the deep sea and from polar seas to the tropics. Students also gain expert numerical, technical, analytical, field sampling, time management and communication skills that make them critical thinkers and highly employable. In its third year, the marine science degree offers students the chance to specialise in either Arctic Studies, with the chance to study at the University in Svalbard, or Oceanography with Robotics, where they will learn more about the future of scientific exploration.
