Police enter parking row

-

Inconsiderate parking outside Kilmartin Village Shop has become such a big problem that villagers have sought the assistance of police and the council.

The issue has been raised at recent Dunadd Community Council meetings when residents claimed that customer and delivery vehicles frequently parked too close to, or across, the driveway that runs between the shop and the Cairns Restaurant.

This leads to homes and properties behind those premises.

One concerned villager said: “It’s dangerous to try and negotiate the entrance at the best of times but it is even more difficult when there is a car parked next to the entrance.

“There have been cars bumped and some near misses.

“I just feel that no one will pay any attention until someone gets hurt."

Police representative Sergeant David Ferguson advised residents to keep a note of all cars parked near or over the access.

Inspector David Sutherland, head of Argyll traffic police, said: “There have been various concerns for sometime regarding parking and access in Kilmartin.

“Negotiations are ongoing with the roads department at Argyll and Bute Council and we are looking at other options.

“Ideally we would like to see a safer access route but while there is no other option we have to make the existing access as safe as possible. If vehicles are obstructing the entrance and making it unsafe for other vehicles then we would take the appropriate action.”

Jeanette Kelly of Kilmartin Village Shop said: “Parking has always been a problem, you just have to be careful.

“In the past 15 years I’ve lived here, it has always been a problem, but it’s just something you’ve got to put up with.

“It would be good if the problem could be resolved with a link road being put in but, until then, we will just need to put up with what we’ve got.”
