Fyne solution set to protect homes from wayward golf balls

- By Rita Campbell

Safety nets will be installed in front of houses at Blarbuie Road in Lochgilphead to protect them from wayward golf balls.

Residents found their homes and cars became collateral damage as stray balls came flying at them last season.

It turned out that teens were sneaking onto the neighbouring Lochgilphead Golf Course without paying.

And poorly aimed shots they were taking from the Ninth Hole were landing at houses on Blarbuie Road rather than on the green below.

They were being sliced more than 140 yards off target and causing damage to property.

The situation got so bad that one woman collected a pile of more than 130 stray balls in her garden. She reported regularly having windows of her car and home smashed. Outgoing club captain Eddie

Shaw said they were being plagued with anti-social behaviour by non-members aged under 18.

But after contacting housing association Fyne Homes, he had some good news to share ahead of the new season.

Eddie said: “Fyne Homes is willing to pay for the safety netting. All going well, we will get that up before the season starts. The housing association confirmed they will provide the netting, which will go along the first tee, behind the green. We are delighted to hear about that.”

The club put up signs reminding golfers to be mindful of neighbouring properties and highlighted the issue in the visitors information sheet at the clubhouse.

Green fees are paid for using an honesty box system. But last year there were issues with people not paying.

This season the committee is considering a mentoring system for juniors, giving them the opportunity to play with members. They would be advised on course etiquette, rules of golf and tips on improving their playing standard.
