Bakewell Market Leek Market

The windy and very wet weekend ensured decent entries of stock at Bakewell with 557 cattle and 1,394 Sheep on offer.

Trade was good on all fronts with store cattle particular­ly dear, the entry of 253 sold on an outstandin­g trade with steers to £1,260, heifers to £1,180 and feeding bulls £880.

Finished cattle were out in force with 125 forward and a solid trade throughout. Top figures of 235p and £1602, the heifer average, while back on the week, was still respectabl­e at 194.5 pence.

There was a substantia­l entry of 104 OTM cattle and feeding cows with the best on offer to 179p and £1,508. The average was an impressive 126.3p. It was good to see more calves coming forward with 75 on offer, the largest entry for many weeks – and an excellent trade to boot, bulls to £440 and heifers £320.

In the sheep department lamb numbers just failed to reach 1,000 but only by eight and despite the larger entry trade looked good.

The best on offer to 268p and £117.65, with the SQQ at a healthy 220.8p. There were 373 cull sheep with ewes to £149 and the average a decent £86.09.

104 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 126.3P

A greater percentage of black and whites including more lean cows and an improved overall average shows cows were again dearer on the week. Top price was 179p for an Angus heifer (31mths) from FH White, Shottle, with top cow at 177p (£1,508) for a smart Blue cow from Katy Allen, Castleton. Natives saw Hereford cows to 140p, Stabilizer­s to 148p and Longhorn to 133p.

47 BLACK & WHITE AND EX-DAIRY COWS AVEREAGE 113.8P

Certainly dearer with the good cows very well sold. Friesians topped at 156p with a lot of better sorts 135p plus. Aided by a couple of large consignmen­ts, there were 253 Store Cattle forward, a decent entry for the time of year.

Trade was outstandin­g with a tremendous line up of buyers either present or represente­d.

All types of cattle well sold but suckler bred sorts attracting the fiercest bidding. Angus and Herefords in great demand with notable prices achieved.

Some wonderful cattle in the entry with remarkable prices to go with them. Top price despite some excellent continenta­ls went to a traditiona­l Red Hereford Steer at £1,260. There were plenty of cattle making well over the £1,000 mark, hence the average at £844.

814 sheep including 696 finished lambs, 2 hoggs and 94 cull sheep. 696 spring lambs averaged 211.58p/kg. A pleasing increase in numbers but trade back on the previous week. A number of lambs lacking finish having an adverse effect on the overall average. Top price of £113 per head and 248p/kg.

Averages: 32.1-39.0kg to 246p/kg average: 208.75p/kg; 39.1-45.5kg to 248p/kg average: 213.07p/kg; 45.6-52kg to 236p/kg ave: 210.96p/kg.

A total of 94 cull sheep averaged £77 per head. Another strong

trade throughout with strong continenta­l ewes to £130.

A smaller sample of 12 ewes with lambs at foot but a strong trade with numerous prospectiv­e purchasers present.

A busy Tuesday sale, with a large entry in the dairy shed, including the special sale of Youngstock and in-calf heifers from Messrs Matkin of Alderwasle­y, who sold milkers to £2,020, and in-calf heifers to £1780, with a top of £2,060 for a heifer from OC Whittaker, Tabley.

Another strong trade for barren cattle with cows up to 151p/kg, and OTM heifers to 181p/kg, topping at £1,272.80 per head.

Clean cattle sold to 207p/kg for a Limousin steer selling to local butchers JW Ash & Son. A firm trade for Prime Lambs, with an overall average of 225p/kg, with strong demand for quality lambs topping at 270p/kg, and also a competitiv­e trade for cull ewes up to £136/head and averaging over £80.

More quality calves and a good trade with blue bull calves to £352 and heifers to £260.

A decent trade for pigs, with the whole entry being fat pigs selling to 130p/kg for bacon pigs, and cutters to 128p/kg.

BARREN COWS (43)

A very strong trade again for barrens with the average up again to 118.5p/kg. Top price of 181p/kg for a 32 month old 555kg Angus from EM & CP Naden, Cheddleton, with a 510kg Hereford at 155p/kg.

Other Angus cows sold at 151p/ kg for a 750kg Angus and a 860kg Angus at 148p/kg, both from JS & M Hollinrake, Flagg, with another

505kg Hereford at 146p/kg from EM & CP Naden. Black & white’s sold up to 141p/kg for a 760kg Holstein from DG & JA Ball, Fulford, and a 680kg Friesian at 140p/kg for FJ Gould & Son, Longnor.

CLEAN CATTLE:

A small entry but sold on a solid trade topping at 207p/kg for a 485kg Limousin steer from Mark Butler, Bagnall, selling to J W Ash Butchers of Leek. Other steers topped at 185p/kg for a 575kg Hereford from J S Hine, who also sold a 675kg Hereford steer at 168p/kg. Heifers sold at 166p/ kg for a 455kg Hereford from Rushton Spencer.

DAIRIES (123)

An extremely busy day in the dairy shed saw 59 milkers sold within the commercial section and the special entry of in-calf heifers and young stock from the Matkin family of Alderwasle­y.

Trade set off at a pace with the first animal through the ring reaching £1,890. A British Friesian heifer from regular vendors, Messrs Howe, was giving 28kg and went to Messrs Bradbury of Monyash. Topping the commercial section at £2,060 was Messrs Whittaker of Tabley with another from Messrs Matkin at £2,020. Cows topped at £1,940 for a third calver from Messrs Watson of Little Longby with others from the same home to £1,920 and £1,880. The superb entry of in-calf heifers and youngstock from Messrs Matkin were keenly sought after, topping at £1,780 for an in-calf heifer with yearlings to £850.

PIGS (109)

Another good entry of pigs with trade back on the week, with pork pigs selling to 128p/kg for 74.6kg pigs from

R&P Organic, Moddershal­l, and also for 73kg pigs from J&B Fentem. Cutting pigs topped at 128p/kg for 75kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch. Bacon pigs sold to 130p/kg three times for 91kg and 92kg pigs from R Wilson, Oldham and for 85kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, with other bacon pigs to 126p/kg for a 95kg pig from

JA & B Minshull, Buxton, and 124p/kg for a 94kg pig from JW Bailey, Cloudside. Heavy pigs sold to 114p/kg for a 106kg pig from J Bennison, Campville, with a 105kg pig at 110p/kg for J Davenport, Gawsworth and 108p/kg for 115kg pigs from PA Dickinson, Bradbourne. Best sorts continue to attract a premium, topping at 270p/kg for an outstandin­g pen from Jack Belfield & Rosie, but plenty of other quality lambs at 250p/kg and better. Big lambs also in strong demand with heavy lambs to 232p/kg and £107.49.
