All hands on deck as green light given for cricket return
IT HAS been all systems go at Ashbourne Cricket Club now the green light has been given for the return of recreational cricket on Saturday.
Last week, club representatives met local MP Sarah Dines and were reassured that she was in their corner on the issue of the resumption of recreational cricket.
Chair of the club David Wood said: “I am sure many MPS made their views known to the PM but we are thankful to Sarah for taking the time to consult with us.
“We are delighted with the resumption of league cricket and we hope to see the juniors back too.
“So many players have come down to help sort out the ground so that we can start with a bang on Saturday.
“But this is not cricket as it was and there are strict protocols that everyone will need to get used to.
“We are expecting to hear from the DCB and the ECB by he middle of the week.
“We can’t say cricket is a low risk game to play and then just let it be a free-for-all.”
Ashbourne firsts are away to Hartshorne in Division Five on Saturday and Ashbourne seconds are at home to Kings Bromley in Division 9W.
Liam Duffy, captain of the firsts, said: “It has been a great turn-out to get things ready.
“Attendance at training has also been high. We are all just so glad to start the season and I am sure we will all reflect on what we have missed.”
Groundsman Andy Hill added: “The wicket is coming along well and there is an even bounce.
“The grass covering is strong due to the extra time to prepare.
“Fingers crossed it plays well on Saturday.”
