Bakewell Market

-

Another busy day with 544 cattle and 1,233 sheep on offer, substantially more cattle than a year ago and evidence that new vendors are finding their way to Bakewell and appreciating the trade and the service.

Busiest section was the store cattle department with 330 head on offer, which included a consignment of over 50 young bulls from Messrs Porter Brothers of Teversal. These attracted a great deal of interest.

The store cattle trade moved up another notch with Steers to £1,270, Heifers to £1,200 and Young Bulls to £1,010 for the first pen of Porter Bros. There were good things to report about the finished cattle trade. The 96 on offer sold to 229p and £1447. The average for the 36 heifers was 201.2p and even more noteworthy was the overall average of 191.3p – a very respectable figure.

There were 82 OTM and Feeding Cows and an excellent trade throughout. There were figures of 166p and £1,665, with the overall average a healthy 131.4p.

Calf numbers back a bit at 36 with Bulls to £280 and Heifers

£195. In the sheep department there were not quite as many lambs as last week at 738. Top figures of 270p and £122.36 per head, the sqq average looked good at 222.7 pence. Ewes peaked at £157 and averaged a very decent £86.69.

82 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 131.4P

Just a few less on offer but trade dearer again with the average up 5p on the week and cows now as dear as we have seen them.

When cows are this dear the only way to sell them is on their legs to a large gathering of potential buyers, both end users and further feeding men all competing hard to secure your cows.

Top price was 166p for a grand Limousin cow six years, from Joe Gibbs, Hartington. Plenty of good cows 150p plus.

39 BLACK & WHITE AND EX-DAIRY COWS AVE 120.5P

Easy to sell with all bidders firing hard. Heifers (33mths) sold to 148p with better cows up to 144p and all the meated sorts 130p+. Big heifers 120 –130p with leaner Holsteins 110-120p and only a handful of plain cows under £1.
