Cup for Julian, Danny shines

-

JULIAN Setford won Ashbourne Golf Club’s Bagshaw Cup competition.

Setford is a long-time member at the club but one of the most recent recruits also caught the eye.

Danny Evans played tremendous golf in both the Bagshaw and the June Medal on the following day to see his handicap tumble yet again.

In conditions not at all conducive to low scoring, Setford scored 38 points with 11 pars to win the Cup.

But he was only one point better in the first division than former Derby County footballer Graham Harbey, who had a birdie two on the 14th hole to card 37 points.

James Naylor, who had a birdie on the 13th, and Andrew Jordan, who played very steadily with 13 pars, were another point back on 36.

Evans won the second division with 37 points and yet again showed why his handicap will almost certainly fall even further this year with birdies on six, eight and 13.

No one else got close in the division although six players, Jim Platt, Frank Marshall, club President Paul Cook, Ken Mckeown, Simon Spencer and Tony Broadhurst all carded a respectable 33 points.

The third division was won by another long-serving member, Andrew Dutton, with 36 points, two ahead of Stuart Cooper on 34.

The weather on Sunday was even worse and this was reflected in the fact that only two players broke net par.

Somewhat unusually the lower handicappers seemed to struggle as badly as those on a higher mark and the best score in division one was carded by Adam Randall with a net 75.

He was two ahead of Simon Lockwood, who had a birdie on the 15th, and Simon Griffiths, who could also do no better than a 77 despite birdies on the second, eighth and 15th.

Evans was in form again, however, despite the conditions, to take division two with a superb net 68 which included a birdie at the eighth. Seven shots back were David Nash and Steve Smith with net 75s.

The only other player to shoot under par net on the day was Tony Harton, who won division three with an excellent net 69 followed by Mick Beech in second place with a net 75.
