Bakewell market

-

SMALL entries of stock for the first market after the Christmas and New Year break with vendors clearly concerned about the possible effects of Brexit and the pandemic on the livestock trade. Thankfully these fears were unfounded and all sections reported outstanding prices. It was a ‘Drop & Go’ market and with tougher restrictions likely in the coming days.

The new variant of the virus is easier to spread than the original strain so we need to maintain maximum space for our buyers. There were only 120 Store Cattle, but more than enough buyers to fight over them and produce some very satisfactory prices, Steers reached £1,160 and heifers £1,160. If you have some for next week please let us know. 76 finished cattle and definitely wanted with the best to 260p and £1,693. The average for the 38 heifers a very healthy 205.3p. Likewise demand for 56 OTM cattle was well up to the mark. Top figures 171p and £1,392 with a decent average at 121.4p. 42 Calves – a strong trade with bulls to £322 and heifers £262. In the sheep section numbers were modest with vendors testing the water in light of possible export difficulties. There were 855 old season lambs with the best to 275p/kg and £131.09.

The SQQ average was a remarkable 240.5p (last year the figure was 215p) only 205 cull sheep which sold on a cracking trade with a top price for ewes of £186 and producing an average of £94.03.

56 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 121.4P

Half the regular numbers for the first sale of the year and only 10 continental cows in the entry. Anybody concerned about trade need not have worried with trade dearer than before Christmas and some remarkable results achieved. Top call was 171p for a Lim x from Messrs Southwell, of Tixall, with the better cows generally upwards of 150p, Angus to 150p & Herefords to 142p.
