Rams’ Cup kids are the pride of Lyons

PAT Lyons L spoke of his pride in the players’ pe performanc­e following Derby County’s 2-0 2defeat by Chorley in the FA Cup.

Derb Derby were without their entire firstteam squad and coaching staff for the third round r tie at Victory Park due to an outbre outbreak of Covid-19.

They had to field a team with an average ag age of only 19 – and not one of the player players had made an appearance for the Rams Rams’ senior side.

Con Connor Hall gave Chorley an early lead b but Derby stayed in the game and pushe pushed their National League North oppon opponents right to the end before Mike Calve Calveley grabbed the home side’s second g goal six minutes from time.

Lyon Lyons, Derby’s senior profession­al developm velopment phase coach, took charge of the te team.

“We knew it was going to be a big challenge but the week the players have had, we are ar proud of every one of them,” he said. ““They have put on an unbelievab­le performanc­e f to tb be in i the th game until til th the last 10 or 15 minutes against physical opponents.”

Derby had the first clear chance of the game when Cameron Cresswell went through on goal, only to be denied.

“We talked about the first 15 minutes being crucial and we had that moment and it could have been a different outcome if we had taken that chance,” Lyons added.

“We knew they were going to be strong on set pieces, we conceded one early on which was disappoint­ing but we rallied and took them all the way to the end of the game.”
