Ward in form to win Wild Trophy

IAN Ward and Stuart Cooper won the latest two men’s competitio­ns at Ashbourne Golf Club, with Ward in particular­ly excellent form.

He spreadeagl­ed the field in the Martyn Wild Trophy stableford competitio­n with a superb 42 points which included a birdie four on the par five eighth and was achieved despite scoring zero points on the second.

Gary Morris won the first division of the event with 38 points and also birdied the eighth with the in-form Ken Bainbridge second on 37, which included birdies on both eight and 10. Kevin Blissett was a further point back.

The division two winner was Clive Gibbins with 39 points which included a birdie on the 17th.

Ken Mckeown was second with 37 points and a better back nine than Mark Beresford, who also had 37.

Martyn Tunaley birdied the third and took the third division with 37 points, winning on the back nine from Andrew Teece. Nick Walker was third with 36.

In the RNLI Medal, the overall winner was Stuart Cooper with a solid nett 69 which included pars on four of the five par threes on the Wyaston Road course.

The division one winner was Mark Knight with nett 70, which included birdies on 10 and 17 and a back nine just good enough to edge out Sean Fernihough on the same score. Andrew Jordan, third with nett 73, had birdies on eight and 17.

The second division winner was Chris Sothers, who once again showed his potential with a nett 70 which included birdies on the fifth and eighth holes, one ahead of Eric Cashmore, with Gary Beech third on 72.

Howard Frost was unlucky not to take the overall trophy with the same nett score as Cooper.

He missed out with an inferior back nine but he was good enough to win division three, two shots ahead of Greg Chaplin. who had a birdie on the 16th in his round of nett 71.
