Andy and Gary turn up heat in men’s events at Ashbourne GC

-

ANDY Rogers and Gary Beech won the two major men’s competitions at Ashbourne Golf Club last week.

In sweltering conditions, superb scores reflected the excellent condition of the Wyaston Road course.

Rogers returned a score of plus-6 in the Rose Cup Bogey competition, which included eight pars and a birdie on the eighth hole. His total was two better than anyone else in the field.

The winner of the first division was the in-form Pierre Weir, who finished on plus-4 helped by a birdie on 15, with the unlucky Dan Potter, who birdied eight, nine and 17, losing out on the back nine for second place.

They were only one ahead of another man in form, Will Austin, who had birdies on nine and 10 to finish third on plus-3.

The second division was won by Andrew Read, who birdied the last to finish on plus-4, one ahead of Paul Fowler, who birdied the second and 15th. Rob Hancock was third on plus-2.

Peter Lane won the third division on plus-3, with Martin Hellaby second on plus-2 and Ian Ward on plus-1 in third.

In the Brough Jeffrey Trophy, played in memory of a true servant and sadly missed member of the club, Beech took the honours with a superb 41 points in the stableford competition.

That was good enough to win by two points and included consecutive birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.

Ryan Overton won the first division with 38 points, including an eagle three on the eighth and a birdie two on the 14th. He finished one ahead of Will Austin, Steve Walwyn, who birdied 17, and Dean Higton, who birdied the last. They all scored 37 points.

The second division winner, on countback, was Trevor Mccabe with 37 points. Three others shared that score – former club catering manager Mike Burton, who birdied 17, Chris Hackett, who birdied the first, and Andrew Read, who had birdies on the fifth and 15th.

Alex Wood won division three with an excellent 39 points from past captain Bob Carter, making a welcome return to form after illness. Phil Green scored 36 points but might well have done better after birdies at the first and seventh.
