WORD OF THE WEEK

- By Kris Forster Youth worker at Ashbourne Elim Church

THIS week has been a really weird one for me, my son was in an accident (he is fine). Looking a bit wider in the world we have everything happening with Afghanistan and then I realised I was down to write a word for the week, something that is encouraging that hopefully helps someone.

So here goes...

In a world where there is so much uncertainty in our personal lives and in the wider world. What do we do when it all looks bleak and miserable? Do we escape? Do we do the one thing that helps us forget about the world, just for a few minutes?

I’m a reader of comic books. I just love losing myself in a story. With a candle on and a cold drink in the evening, it’s like my go-to thing, and it was the thing that I did in the evening of my son’s little accident, because although he was fine it was what COULD HAVE happened that affected me the most.

Sometimes that’s the issue; it’s the unknown or the possibilities in life that get us.

I’m sure you have your own way of escaping. Which in our current climate is completely understandable and okay but is escaping the things that make us sad or anxious the answer? I would say no.

Being a Christian I face my problems WITH God. in Psalm 34:18 it says The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

God encourages us to deal with our heartaches and our anger alongside him. In doing so we feel God close to us.

So next time the news or the world or your life gets too much and you want to just escape and forget about it, only to have it still hanging over your head (like I have done too many times), I would encourage you to take 10 seconds/one minute/ whatever time you want or have to speak to God about it.

You might be surprised at what happens.
