Mel’s sporting life continues to bring him some success

MEL Godfrey ,who was an excellent all-round local sportsman with Clifton

CC, Ashbourne Town FC and Ashbourne RUFC in his younger days, won the Dethick Trophy at Ashbourne Golf Club.

Godfrey scored a superb 41 points in the Stableford competitio­n, thanks largely to five pars on the front nine. He was two points clear of his nearest rival.

The winner of the first division prize with 39 points was Kevin Blissett, who finished with four pars and the same points score but a better back nine, as Sean Fernihough, who birdied 14, was left to rue a double-bogey on the par five 15th.

Dean Higton was third with 38 points, helped by birdies on eight and 17.

In division two, the winner was Mike Taylor, also with 39 points, including a birdie on the eighth, with Chris Hackett second on 38 points and his father Arnie third with a birdie on 17 helping him to a total of 37.

Andrew Teece won the third division with 36 points, with Levi Mobbs and Bernard Bembridge second and third on 35 points each.

In the August Medal the following day, Martin Murphy won division one with a nett 69, including a birdie on the 13th, the same score as Higton, who birdied eight, 15 and 17. Phil Garner was third on 71 after a flying start with a birdie on the first.

Simon Griffiths had a nett par 71 off plus one with birdies on eight and 18 to finish fourth.

The clear winner of division two was Adam Walker with a nett 67.

Mark Beresford was second with a nett 70 and David Nash third on 73.

Martin Hellaby, who birdied the fifth, had a nett 71 to win the third division, one ahead of Mick Beech and past captain Bob Carter, who had a birdie two on the sixth.
