A very civil war...

HONOURING THOSE WHO DIED IN A BLOODY CHAPTER OF BRITISH HISTORY

SWORDS, cannons, spears and muskets have clashed in battle on a farm in the Staffordshire Moorlands, in what is thought to be the largest ever re-enactment to have taken place in the area.

Moorside Farm in Cauldon Lowe was the site of a Bank Holiday battle staged by the Sealed Knot Society, who filled the fields with a weekend of living history, including live battles, arts and crafts, historic cooking and family education.

The event, which took place on Sunday and Monday, was free to attend as part of its Covid security measures and the charity-run society promised to bring history to life and to let people experience the horrors of the civil war.

Ahead of the reenactment member Dave Cooper said: “The aims of the society are not to glorify war, but to honour those that died in the many battles of the English Civil War, and to educate the public about those wars, and also about the lives and times of people in that period.

“The name of the Society derives from a group, which, during the Protectorate, plotted for the restoration of the monarchy. Here the similarity ends as the present society is non political.

“Our events vary in size, a major battle lasts for two or three days, often, but not always, over Bank Holiday weekends, and can see thousands of combatants taking to the field.”

The society also carries out school visits to spread its message even further, and lessons can range from cookery and clothing to politics and weaponry.
