Bakewell Market

The last Tuesday market of the year was well supported with 921 sheep but thereford were only

115 cattle on offer.

Those vendors who did consign stock were well pleased with the results and a good trade prevailed in all sections.

Only 60 store and breeding cattle forward, but they sold at similar prices to the previous week’s exceptiona­l trade with the steers to £1,160 and heifers £970 within the rather limited selection.

Thereford was only a handful of finished cattle which looked well sold with top figures 252p and £1,853, the overall average being 225p.

The small entry of over-30 months and feeding cows had examples at 193p and £1196. The average for a rather mixed sample was 130.7p.

A nice selection of 26 calves attracted plenty of interest with bulls to £480 and heifers £210.

In the sheep department the 719 lambs made their money with top figures 290p and £130.56.

The SQQ and the overall average were the same at 241p. Thereford were 202 cull sheep an entry with a good many plain sorts on offer. The top price was a healthy £179 but the average at £78.11 demonstrat­es the quality of the sample.

19 BARREN, OTM & FEEDING COWS, OVERALL AVERAGE 130.79P/KG

Another competitiv­e trade for all on offer with the better sorts to a top of 193p with only the plainest black and whites below the 100p/ kg level.

Another large gathering of purchasers ensured a strong trade for all with best quality calves at a distinct premium. Both bulls and heifers in keen demand and with a shortage of black and ehite calved within the entry.

Meated sorts wanted with some small Beltex lambs topping the market at 295p and 290p/ kg. Heavy weight butchers lambs to 262p/kg with a top gross of £130.56. Overall average 241.72p/ kg.

A good entry of 202 cull ewes and rams saw several grazing buyers operating with a larger proportion of plain sorts, overall average does not reflect the tremendous trade. Best Texels peaked at £179, Suffolk to £125, Mules to £114, Southdowns to £86 Herdwick to £84 Horned ewes to £77. Ewes to £179, average £78.11. Rams to £144 Ave £123.60

The sale included 1094 sheep, comprising 866 finished lambs, 156 culls and 72 store sheep

866 LAMBS, AVERAGE 237.32/KG

Another respectabl­e entry with trade very similar to the previous week but a number of lambs within the entry lacking finish reducing the overall average.

Top call at 300p/kg and £135 per head with an overall average of just over £101 per head.

A similarly strong trade to the previous week with continenta­l ewes to £158.

72 STORE SHEEP

Store lambs in keen demand with a number of purchasers present. Top prices of £90 with an average of £81.32. Breeding ewes a similar story with the best of these to £136.

Leek Market

A quieter bank holiday tuesday but some excellent prices achieved in all sections. An exceptiona­l trade for butchers’ lambs and ewes, with prices back up to 300p/kg and averaging a remarkable 249p/kg or £104.22 per head. Meated lambs were a pleasure to sell. Ewes were again, a remarkable trade reaching heady heights of £184 and an average of £114.47 per head speaks for itself.

Fewer cattle about and barrens sold up to 147p/kg or £1,007.50, with clean in good demand up to 230p/kg or £1748.

Pigs sold very well, with averages well up on the last few weeks, with heavy pigs leading the day at 164p/kg and bacon pigs to 164p/ kg.

A small entry of dairies after the previous week’s bumper entry, but a lovely trade once again, selling up to £2,080 for heifers.

Calves continue to sell better and better, with stores looking strong money, plenty of customers are coming forward to fill up on stock.

Bulls sold up to £460 and £450 for strong Simmentals and heifers to £390 and £375 for Simmentals.

BARREN COWS (15)

A small entry due to the bank holiday and nice trade throughout to average at 125.87p/kg or £833.27. Top price of 147p/kg for a 655kg Holstein cow from G R Spink, Grindon, with a 695kg Aberdeen Angus at 142p/kg for D&SRogers,Ch in ley. Other Holsteins sold up to 140p/kg for a 685 kg cow from R& TC low es, Dilhorne.

CLEAN CATTLE (11)

A decent entry sold on a good trade up to 230p/kg for a

715kg Simmental steer and also for a 760kg Simmental steer, both from Rushton Spencer, with a 630kg Friesian steer at 210p/kg. Heifers topped at 220p/kg for a 585kg Simmental, with a

610kg Aberdeen Angus heifer at 209p/kg for Glyn Redfern, Onecote.

Top headage price of £1,748, £1,644.50 and £1,323 for steers with heifers topping at £1,287.

DAIRIES

A smaller entry but plenty of customers at the ringside and a solid price for all on offer. A very smart pedigree heifer from the Sternmoor herd of Michael Wainwright topped the day at £2,080 and selling locally to a Staffordsh­ire farmer who also secured another heifer from Ernest White and family, Moscar, at £1,940. Richard Lomas was also in the money with his newly calved heifer at £1,920.

Cows topped at £1,750 for a third calver from Messrs Charleswor­th, Bradbourne.

PIGS (81)

A excellent trade for pigs with some excellent prices achieved. A single 70kg pig realised 144p/kg for David Goldstraw, Meerbrook, who also sold cutters at 163p/kg for 84kg pigs and a trio of 84kg pigs from Steve Bailey at 150p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 164p/ kg for a superb trio of 97kg pigs from Dave Goldstraw, with the Fentems selling 87kg and 96kg pigs at 146p/kg and 140p/kg. A pair of 90kg pigs made 139p/kg for PF & PD Parsons and a 87kg pig at 139p/kg. Plenty of bacon pigs 130p and above.

Heavy pigs just as dear with a trio of 108kg pigs at 167p/kg for Dave Goldstraw. A 107kg pig realised 117p/kg for Bernard Minshull and a pair of 110kg pigs made 109p/kg for the Parsons.

Sows sold up to 64p/kg for a 255kg sow from P J Barker, Charnwood, who also sold a 287kg pig for 56p/kg. a 255kg sow made 57p/kg for Chris Hine and a 220kg sow realised 54p/kg for Alan Worth, Marton.

Averages: Cutting pigs (6) average 156.49p/kg or £132.23/ head; Bacon pigs (60) average 125.45p/kg or £116.94/head; Heavy pigs (7) average 134.45p/ kg or £145.40/head; Cull sows (6) average 53.71p/kg or £125.33/ head.

SHEEP SECTION BUTCHERS LAMBS (754)

A reduced entry saw another exceptiona­l trade for all the goods on offer and many, many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

Best sorts in extreme demand up to 300p/kg and many pens at 280p plus regardless of weight.

Many, many more meated lambs required every week to satisfy orders.

Overall average of 249p/kg or £104.22 speaks for itself

Best Beltex ewes from Callum Banks at Clayton to £184 but the medium Texels looking very dear at £125-£145 for pen after pen of ewes. Mules seeing £125 for the best, lean ewes still difficult to sell unless they look bright enough to graze and improve.

Overall average of £114.47!

CALVES (90)

A good entry for the bank holiday week and a fantastic trade throughout with additional buyers looking for numbers.

31 CONTINENTA­L BULLS, AVERAGE £302.61

Much dearer on the week with a new buyer looking to fill his trailer. A run of six Simmentals (6-8 wks) from Messrs Huxley sold to £460, £450, £430, £405 etc with fresh Blues to £390. Top 10 £350plus; medium bulls very dear £240-£300 with smaller sorts under £230.
