Free computer sessions offer at the library

-

FREE one-to-one computer sessions are being offered at Ashbourne library, as part of a week-long national scheme to increase skills.

Derbyshire Libraries is inviting people who do not use a computer, or people who want to use their computer more, to join a free programme as part of Get Online Week, which starts on Monday.

The scheme, which runs until Sunday, October 24, is organised by the Good Things Foundation, a charity working for digital inclusion, and it is aimed at supporting people who want to learn more about the online world.

Derbyshire County Council’s libraries are taking part in the scheme by offering lessons in how to use a smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer.

Councillor Barry Lewis, leader of Derbyshire County Council and cabinet member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change, said: “Such a lot of life is inaccessible to people who haven’t yet got online.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to take that first step with our friendly and helpful librarians.

“And people who do go online already but are unsure of their skills and would like to be able to do more will also benefit from a bit of expert tuition.”

Libraries run the digital skills support sessions over the phone and tailor them to fit people’s needs, and this scheme is an extension of that service.

Anyone who needs to get something done online or who wants to use the free Wifi or computers in the library is asked to contact Derbyshire’s Library Information Service on 01629 533444 or email ask. library@derbyshire.gov.uk

A librarian will then ring them, have a talk through how they can help and make an appointment to do that.

Cllr Lewis added: “The pandemic has shown us how valuable online connections are to keep us in touch with friends and loved ones.

“If you’re someone who has been missing out on the digital world, I would urge you to find out more and see how you can benefit.”
