Bakewell Market

-

Although many producers may have been tied up under the sixday rule having bought breeding sheep and rams at last week’s sales there were still 756 cattle and 1,646 sheep on offer.

Trade in all sections was worthy of note, particularly the finished lambs and cattle, full details of which can be found below. A few less store and breeding cattle at 454, but a very brisk trade again with steers to £1,470 and Heifers £1,300, Feeding Bulls reached £1,170 and cows and calves £1,460.

In the Finished Cattle section there were 128 on offer with the best to 296p and £1,935. As an indicator of general price levels the 63 heifers averaged 229.6p. Things were also good in the OTM department with 140 animals forward. Top figures 201pp and £1,438 and another great average of 143.5p.

Calves - a bit thin on the ground with only 34 on sale. Bulls to £490 and Heifers £400.

Things were very buoyant in the sheep section. The 1,078 finished lambs reached 280p and £155.76 and the SQQ average was tremendous 248.0p.

In the Cull Sheep department there was a decent entry of 566 with ewes selling to £161 and the average was £98.98.

140 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 143.5P

A tremendous entry and average for October with the average up by two pence on the week but in reality, some cows were a little less money this week and a few extra overage distorted the price. Plenty of customers around the ring including several looking for feeding cows to keep and improve their value. The best way to market cows is on their legs in Bakewell, where all options are available and the best prices can be achieved. OTM clean today topped at 201p with several others 180-196p. Best cows sold to 180p with plenty of better-bred cows 165-180p
