ASHBOURNE’S new community cinema project is continuing to go from strength to strength, say its organisers, who are already busy planning a third screening.

The volunteer-run project aims to bring world, independent and the best of commercial cinema to the Ashbourne area and is planning to screen one film every month.

The current series began last month with “Judy”, a 2019 biographical drama film based on the life of American actress Judy Garland, starring Academy Award Winning actress Renée Zellweger.

And last week the group screened its second film, the documentary drama “Yuli”, which followed the life and career of revered ballet dancer Carlos Acosta from his early life in Cuba to his international fame with the Royal Ballet.

Around 60 people gathered in St John’s Church to see the film, which organisers say was warmly received and the group’s chairman Sue Hodgson says it provides momentum for the next set of screenings.

She said: “We are very pleased that the community cinema has struck a chord with local people and happy that they want to support us.

“It gives us confidence that there is real need for quality cinema in Ashbourne.” The Community Cinema, which is backed by the Ashbourne Festival team, has another two films planned for this year and is already looking ahead to its 2022 season.

Due to show on Thursday, November 25 the Oscar-winning movie “Rocks”, a coming-of-age drama showcases the joy, resilience and spirit of girlhood, will be the next one to hit the big screen.

And this will be followed on Thursday, December 16 by American neo-western drama “Nomad

land”, a film about modern-day nomads in the USA,

All the screenings are at St John’s Church in Buxton Hill and tickets are priced at £6.
