False start proves so costly for Ashbourne

- LOUGHBOROUGH 28 ASHBOURNE 17

ASHBOURNE were slow out of the blocks as Loughborough claimed their first win of the Midlands Two East (North) campaign.

The visitors had issues to deal before kick-off as injuries took their toll. There were five changes among the backs from the previous game, with hamstring injuries counting for six absences in the Ashbourne squad overall.

Loughborough went through for two soft tries in the first 15 minutes to establish a 14-0 lead.

That at least sparked Ashbourne into life, as they clawed their way back into the contest and trailed 17-12 at half-time.

And they were level five minutes into the second half as they began to dominate the set pieces.

Ashbourne’s forwards were making a difference, with captain John Ford leading the way in the second row, well supported by James “Monty” Lyon.

Centre Nick Palmer was also making his presence felt, the experienced player marshalling the young backs around him.

But Ashbourne then had a run of penalties against them, Loughborough kicking two of them to lead 23-17.

Ashbourne were continuing to have success with some forward drives before they conceded a soft try, Loughborough capitalising on an interception for what proved to be the final score.

The visitors pushed for a losing bonus point in the closing stages but were held up on the Loughborough line as the home side celebrated a 28-17 win.

Ashbourne are at home to Market Rasen & Louth on Saturday and plan a minute’s silence before the 2.15pm kickoff to remember six club members who have died during the time the pandemic stopped games and training from taking place, although only one of the deaths was Covid-related.

The six are Ray Wason, Jean Brown, Bob Pinfield, Glyn Wilson, Fred Atterbury and Roger Oakes and anyone connected to them is invited to attend.

Ashbourne’s 2nds are scheduled to play away at Eccleshall 2nds on Saturday, while the 3rds travel to Mansfield and the Colts are at home to Melbourne.
