Raiders strip lead from roof of building at stately home

-

CRIMINALS have stripped the lead from an historic building based in the gardens at a stately home near Ashbourne

Officers from Derbyshire police are investigating after staff at Kedleston Hall discovered that thieves had targeted a building in the estate’s gardens.

The incident, which took place between Saturday, December 4, and Sunday, December 5, left the roof of the building bare and the underlying material exposed to the elements.

While Kedleston Hall itself was left untouched, its Grade I Listed status extends to its gardens, as they are deemed to be of “exceptional national, architectural or historical importance”.

Officers from the Derbyshire Rural Crime Team are investigating and say they believe the people responsible came from the direction of Lodge Lane, which runs to the west of the estate. The team is urging anyone who might have seen or heard anything, or has any information relating to the incident, to get in touch.

It said: “Overnight between Saturday, December 4, and Sunday, December 5, a quantity of lead has been stripped from a building in the gardens of Kedleston Hall.

“Kedleston Hall and its gardens are Grade I

Listed and as such are of exceptional national, architectural and historical importance.

“The restoration work now needed to return this building to it former glory will be costly and require specialist work.

“It is believed the offenders have come from the direction of Lodge Lane.

“We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information regarding the theft. If you have any information please get in touch.”
