A VERY busy day at Bakewell with 964 Cattle and 1,479 Sheep on offer.

The exceptiona­l entry was a consequenc­e of the Easter Bank Holiday and the fact that this week is also a Bank Holiday, although in accordance with tradition Bakewell Market operated as normal on May Day, Monday, May 2.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section attracted a total entry of 595 head with a tremendous trade right through the sale.

Steers reached an outstandin­g £1,730 with Heifers £1,600 and Feeding Bulls £1,190.

In the Breeding Section Cows & Calves peaked at £1,760 with in calf Heifers to £1,320.

The Finished Cattle Section was well supported with a total of 168 animals and a solid trade prevailed throughout. Top figures 300p and £2,145.

As an indicator of the level of price the 56 heifers averaged 251.1p.

The OTM department attracted 149 cattle with the auctioneer reporting that trade was the dearest ever seen.

Top figures 248p and £2,128 with the average at a record breaking 185.2p.

52 Calves this week with Bulls to £490 and Heifers £265.

In the Sheep Section Spring lambs in short supply with only 55 on offer selling to 438p and £177.75 per head. SQQ ave 375.2p.

Not a bad turnout of 848 Old Season Lambs (hoggs) peaking at 332p and £157.94 per head. The SQQ average was 288.2p.

A much larger entry of 572 Cull Sheep saw ewes to £226 to average £134.08.

149 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 185.23P OR £1279.16

A fantastic entry of 149 cows today from 74 vendors all coming to Bakewell to enjoy the trade that we experience week on week. Cows are very dear at present and while the price is so high the only way to achieve the best price is to sell them on their legs in Bakewell Livestock Market.

43 Cows today topped £2 kilo including 2 dairy cows with a super Lim heifer (35 mnths) at the top of the pile at 248p from Jonathon Salisbury with another heifer at 237p for Messrs Rowlinson, Denstone. Top cow was from Mark Shenton a Blonde x cow at 231p (£1709). Top gross today was a big blue cow from R Vaughan at £2128 (224p).

A good post-holiday entry and all sections a fast trade.

Best long meated Texels probably went a little dearer later in the day with 7 vendors £199 and above to a top of £226/head for Jackie Trueman. Best strong Suffolk x ewes towards £160 with the biggest of the Mules over £135. Best Lonks and horned around £101 with plenty of bidders for the plain sorts. The top 9 pens averaged a massive £211 with the total entry levelling at £134.08. Slaughter rams a good trade with Texels at £153 three times and others to £147.
