Ashbourne defeated as Burne hits century

-

ASHBOURNE fell to a fourwicket defeat against Sandiacre Town thirds in Derbyshire County League Division Six South.

Charith De Silva captained Ashbourne but an ongoing ankle injury meant he couldn’t run, so the home side were effectively a player down.

Tom Jordan replaced the unavailable Umar Usman which strengthened the batting but meant Ashbourne were a bowler light.

Ashbourne lost the toss and were put into bat, when they would have bowled first.

There were early wickets for Sandiacre’s Max Peake, who bowled some good out swing, before Jordan steadied the ship and looked set for a big score until he holed out to deep mid wicket five short of his 50.

Asher and Sahir Alam both scored quickly and at one stage Ashbourne looked to be heading for 200, a good total at The Rec.

But both were caught playing attacking strokes and the tail fell quickly, as Ashbourne were all out for 170 in the 42nd over.

Sandiacre’s captain Richie Burne never looked in trouble at the crease and played a fine knock to reach a century, finishing 104 not out, which included 20 boundaries.

Burne made the difference as Arsherr Fernando and Sahir Alam led the Ashbourne attack well, with Arsherr picking up two and Sahir unlucky for the second game in a row.

The change bowlers struggled for line and length, giving away too many runs.

Piyush Joshi came on too late but was the pick of the bowlers with his spin. When he took two in two, Ashbourne thought they had a chance.

Wickets fell at one end but they couldn’t dislodge Burne as Sandiace cruised to the win after 38 overs with six wickets down.

Ashbourne claimed a winning draw against Kings Bromley seconds in Division Nine South/west.

Batting first, Ashbourne set a target of 209-6 with opener Colin Terry making 73, before Kings Bromley reached 137-6 in reply.

Ashbourne thirds suffered an eight-wicket defeat at home against Allestree seconds in Division Nine Central/south.

After winning the toss and electing to bat Ashbourne made 121-9, which Allestree reached in 35 overs for the loss of two wickets.

VISHAL Bubber hit a century off 53 balls, including 11 sixes, as Brailsford beat Winshill by four wickets in Division Three South.

Winshill were put into bat and made 236-4 before Bubber took centre stage, making 103 as the home side reached their target in the 39th over for the loss of six wickets.

It was a recovery for Brailsford after they were 28 all out the previous week.

Bubber (30) has been at the club since he was 12 and is the only player to score centuries for Brailsford firsts, seconds, thirds and fourths.

In Division Nine South/ West, Brailsford thirds drew at home with Rolleston fourths, who set a target of 156-4. The home side were 128-9 in reply.

CLIFTON seconds lost by 48 runs away against Mickleover in Division Six South.

The home side were 168 all out in 39.3 overs as Robert Mccurrach led the Clifton bowlers with four wickets.

But Clifton were all out for 120 in reply as Jamie Holloway did the most damage with five wickets.

Clifton thirds celebrated a home win against Kirk Langley seconds in Division Nine South/west.

Wicketkeeper Matty Gillis made a maiden 50 as Clifton batted first, finishing on 51 not out, while Ben King made 69 as Clifton set a target of 271-7.

Billy Higton then took 5-27 as Kirk Langley were dismissed for 146 in the 35th over.

WOOTTON captain Ben Clowes led from the front with a fine 104 to steer his side to victory against Hilton in Division Four South.

Clowes received good support, most notably from Will Kent with 40 not out, as Wootton set a target of 277-7 in their 45 overs.

With wickets hard to come by it was a case of keeping the run-rate down with tight bowling and fielding.

Wootton worked hard and despite 72 from Alan Barber and 61 not out from Rob Matthews, Hilton were held to 254-6 in their 45 overs.

The 22 points take Wootton to the top of the early table.

Wootton seconds were away at Breadsall in Division Seven South and the visitors were inspired to victory by their captain, William Heathcote.

He made 104 not out to help Wootton reach 209-6.

With only one over remaining, Wootton managed to dismiss Breadsall for 129 with all the bowlers contributing.

Richard Whitehurst was top wicket taker with 3-34.
