Fun and funds at Ed’s President’s Day
Wootton Cricket Club
ON Sunday, July 20, Wootton Cricket Club held its first President’s Day organised by the current club president, Ed Barker.
The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Cllr Philip Hudson, and the Mayoress Karen his wife, were the guests of honour, together with special guests Kendra and Mark Gray, who represented the O’connor Gateway Charitable Trust, Ed’s chosen charity, which works to combat addiction and provide rehabilitation.
One hundred guests enjoyed a two-course meal provided by Wayne Smith Butchers, and desserts provided by club members.
The Mayor thanked Ed and the club’s excellent hospitality. As an excricketer himself he appreciated the commitment and hard work in establishing and continuing to provide a sporting activity of a high standard which benefitted the whole community.
Ed thanked the Mayor and Mayoress for attending and paid tribute to the work of the charity which Kendra outlined.
He then invited everyone to watch a match between his president’s XI captained by Peter Carr, son of former president the late Bill Carr, and the club’s Sunday XI.
Ed noted that many of the younger players were relatives of founder members, thus ensuring the club’s continuing legacy.
There followed an entertaining, well competed for game in the brilliant sunshine and an ideal opportunity for associates of the club to reminisce and enjoy village cricket at its very best.
Ed presented the winning trophy to Matt Titterton, the captain of the Sunday team.
Later he was able to present £1,315 to the O’connor Gateway Charitable Trust as proceeds from the day, which he and all those attending hope will be an annual event.
